WILTON — First Selectman William Brennan cracked a smile after the Republican Town Committee [RTC] unanimously backed him for a second term at Tuesday night's caucus.
"Here we go again," he said, shaking Selectman Harold Clark's hand. Clark and Selectman Susan Bruschi were also nominated to serve another term.Brennan took office two years ago, taking the post long held by fellow Republican Paul Hannah. At this week's meeting in the Wilton Library, the 25 RTC members [two of whom joined the gathering via conference call] praised Brennan for his managerial skills, his work as an advocate for Wilton and his ability to streamline communication both inside and outside of Wilton Town Hall.
"If you go into town hall now, you'll see there's a whole new look and whole new feel to it, but it's not just window dressing," said RTC Chairman Michael Kaelin, who said Brennan made the town's infrastructure more efficient.
State Rep. Toni Boucher [R-143] praised the first selectman's work beyond the town line and his ability to create alliances with those who disagree with him. She offered the expansion of the Super 7 expressway as an example.
"He's stepped across borders," she said. "He's formed a friendship with the mayor of Norwalk who is on the other side of that difficult issue."
For his part, Brennan is proud to be nominated for another term.
"My objectives remain the same," he said, "to improve town governance and to strive to make Wilton a better place to live and raise a family."
Much still needs to be done, said Brennan. The first selectman wants to finalize the town's capital project procedure, create emergency plans for Wilton and renovate the Comstock Community Center, among other things.
The RTC nominated three candidates for the board of finance; Warren Serenbetz, Al Alper and newcomer Alicia Lindgren, who the RTC nominated to replace Lenore Palmer, who is resigning.
Gil Bray, James Saxe and veteran public servant Richard Dubow will run for the board of education. Dubow began his political career on the board of education in 1979, served on the board of selectmen and currently chairs the board of finance.
RTC Vice Chairman Harry Somerdyk, who chaired Tuesday's meeting after Kaelin left to return to work, said Dubow's experience will be invaluable to the board of education, which is losing long-time members Dona Waskom and Lisa Bogan. Bruschi left the board in spring to join the board of selectmen.
Fred Sindel was nominated for the board of assessment appeals. Sally Poundstone, Marilyn Gould, Dona Waskom and Eric Osterberg were nominated for planning and zoning commission. Barbara Frees, Miriam Sayegh and John Comiskey were nominated to run for the zoning board of appeals. Peter Bell was nominated as an alternate.
The RTC nominated Christopher Gardner, Colleen O'Brien, Christopher Dubrowski and Richard Ziegler for the office of constable.
