Senator Judith G. Freedman (R-26) is urging her constituents to plan their back-to-school shopping
for the week of Aug. 19 through Aug. 25 to take advantage of Connecticut's annual sales tax holiday.

"Even if you make a point of shopping the regular sales, buying clothing and shoes for growing children
heading back to school gets expensive. I believe that one of the best breaks we offer families is the annual sales tax holiday week, during which no Connecticut state sales tax is charged on items of clothing and footwear that costs less than $300," said Ms. Freedman.

According to the state Department of Revenue Services, the holiday tax break applies to "sales made by Connecticut retailers, sales made by out-of-state retailers required to collect Connecticut use tax on sales to Connecticut customers,
and purchases by Connecticut customers on which they would otherwise be required to self-assess use tax."

During the rest of the year, there is no state sales tax on clothing and footwear items that cost less than $50.
Ms. Freedman said the state Department of Revenue Services includes a comprehensive explanation of the annual
sales tax holiday on its Web site at www.ct.gov/drs.
