No contest election draws 20% of Wilton voters to the polls

No unexpected twists came this Election Day, as all 34 candidates in both political parties were elected in the uncontested race this year.

“This was the closest thing to a nonpartisan campaign for the benefit of this town,” said Planning and Zoning Commissioner Michael Rudolph at a post-election party on Tuesday night.

There was some joking over the uncontested nature of the town election Tuesday night.

“I can tell you with confidence you all won and you all did well,” said Michael Kaelin, chair of the Republican Town Committee, despite not yet having received the official results from the registrars’ office.

First Selectman William Brennan said Tuesday night “what makes Wilton special is we all work together,” and praised the parties for working hard to get the vote out.

Of 10,903 eligible voters, 2,235, or 20.5%, cast ballots in the election. The chairs of both town committees seemed pleased with that figure when reached for comment on Wednesday morning.

“Twenty percent is terrific. It’s what I was hoping for,” said Mr. Kaelin.

“I thought turnout was great. Talking to everybody ... they were thinking we’d be lucky with 15%. It certainly speaks well of our voting populace,” said John Kalamarides, chair of the Democratic Town Committee.

But not all were pleased with the figure. Peggy Reeves, Democratic registrar of voters, said the town has “the dubious distinction of having one of the lowest turnouts of the state.” She said in the past, when there had been uncontested races, 30% of voters had still turned out to vote.

“We’re pretty bad when you look at the figures,” she said.

And Troy Ellen Dixon, member of the Board of Education, described the voter turnout as “really pathetic” Tuesday night.

Mr. Kalamarides said Tuesday night that he hoped the two parties could continue to work together in the spirit of nonpartisanship.

‘Let’s not have a pitched battle” when there are disagreements, said Mr. Kalamarides. He said he was pleased with the vote totals for the Democrats.

“I thought everybody did pretty well. We always could have done better, but I was happy with how it turned out,” he said.

Mr. Kaelin said he was pleased to see “that the people who voted obviously recognize people who have done a lot of things for the town.” He pointed to Dona Waskom, Richard Dubow and Susan Bruschi, top vote-getters in their first campaigns for the Planning and Zoning Commission, Board of Education, and Board of Selectmen, respectively.

Ms. Waskom had served on the Board of Education for eight years. Mr. Dubow served on the Board of Education from 1979 to 1987, the Board of Selectmen from 1996 to 1999, and currently serves as chair of the Board of Finance. Ms. Bruschi served on the Board of Education for six years before coming to the Board of Selectmen this past January.

Despite the uncontested nature of the contest, there were those who expressed a desire for more choices on their ballots. In voting District 1, there were 19 voters who chose to write in a candidate on their ballot for the office of first selectman, despite there being no official write-in candidates.

Ms. Reeves said the registrars don’t keep track of the write-ins because of the lack of an official write-in candidate, but that some of the ballots had her name for first selectman along with Selectman Richard Creeth’s, who was re-elected to a third term on the Board of Selectmen.

And then there were those who were so dissatisfied that they wrote “anyone else” as a write-in candidate for first selectman.

Mr. Brennan said he was thrilled to be re-elected and that he would like to bring the various boards and committees in town together to discuss ways to work together better.
